Sophie and the Teal Pumpkin -- Writing Contest

This week, I am entering Susanna Leonard Hill's 5th annual Halloweensie Writing Contest.  The rules in the contest are:
- It must be 100 words or less.
- It must include the words: haunt, dark, and costume.

I hope you enjoy reading this story for kids as much as I enjoyed creating it!  (And for those of you who know my three year old daughter, Sophie, I am indeed writing this story in honor of her.  Every holiday, every party, every meal, we have to know the ingredients of what she is consuming.  This year, there are many people joining in on the Teal Pumpkin movement and helping our little girl and thousands of other children not feel left out by providing more options than just sweet treats.)

Sophie and the Teal Pumpkin

Sophie is on a hunt.
Her allergies are real.
She is searching this Halloween
for a pumpkin painted teal.

She puts on her costume
Spins and twirls.
She adorns her hair
With beautiful curls.

Out the door she goes
With mommy behind
She has one thing
on her mind.

She is looking for a home
With prizes instead of treats
Because there are many candies
She cannot eat.

Past the haunted house
that glows.
Past orange pumpkins
in long rows.

At last, just before dark she squeals!
Now she is jumpin'!
She found a home
with a prized teal pumpkin!

  1. Love this character as she's on the hunt for her teal pumpkin! Spinning and twirling with her beautiful curls. I can just picture it. And so sweet that you wrote it for your daughter. Great job, Carrie!

  2. Very nice. We got a pumpkin called pink porcelain. So I'm sure there's a teal one somewhere. =)

  11. What a great idea! I didn't know about the Teal Pumpkin either, but I know that allergies are very real and make Halloween hard to celebrate for some little trick-or-treaters. We don't have many come to our house because of where we live, so I think next year I'll do the Teal Pumpkin and let my friends' kids with dietary restrictions know about it. (I'd do it this year, but I already bought candy.)

  13. I had never heard of the teal pumpkin idea, but what a great thing, and how wonderful to tell a Halloween story that embraces allergy-challenged kids! Original, educational and fun! Thanks so much for joining in the contest, Carrie, and hope Sophie has a safe and fun Halloween! :)

  14. So unique to do a story about a child who must avoid the treats because of allergies...there are so many kids for whom this is a big concern. And I LOVE that she got her teal pumpkin prize. ;) Great job, Carrie!

  16. I am surprised how many haven't heard of the Teal Pumpkin but I suppose I shouldn't be. You should take this further. Perhaps a whole book well in advance of next year's Halloween!
I don't have a teal pumpkin (and I think others don't because it can be a pain in the butt to create one for some people) but do I hand out Wonkas, Smarties and Dum Dums (which is still a problem for corn and dye allergies I think). We had 8 kids say they had peanut or nut allergies at our door so I was happy to have my chocolate candies in a separate bin. (I grew up with and still have food allergies... and am hoping my son outgrows his!).
    Great job!
